June 30, 2017

Written by Ciara Johnson

It’s time to book a trip and take some time for a little R&R but before you schedule that flight and hotel to your go-to beach getaway, why not breakaway from the chains of your comfort zone and explore this vast planet for rare hidden gems? Dare to take a risk and gallivant far away to picturesque secluded beaches that have little to no human intrusion, to places that you wouldn’t even know were on a map.

DBTI has searched each beach-laden continent looking for destinations with pristine azure waters, fine sand and views that require both a pinch back to reality and a snapshot to post on your social media. Some say the path least traveled is the one worth taking; so the next time you’re planning your beach getaway be sure to check out these rare sandy beach gems.

Spiaggia dei Conigli, Lampedusa, Sicily, Italy

Located in the Mediterranean Sea this Sicilian island sits as the most southern island in Italy. Apart of the Pelagie Islands this little piece of land could geographically be considered part of Africa, due to its close proximity to Tunisia. Untainted from the resort lifestyle this sea-enraptured land is a nature reserve that can only be accessed by boat making it a true untouched paradise. The rugged coastline met by pristine white sands that are kissed by crystal clear waters, superb for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay, Australia

Tucked away in Jervis Bay just off the New South Wales coast of Australia you will find the host of the world’s whitest sands. A destination fit for many demographics Hyams offers both classic cottages and luxury ocean front villas in close proximity to the crystal clear waters that give way to gentle waves making this destination a swimmers utopia. From watersports to fishing charters to sightseeing tours there is plenty to do along the bay and if you find that you’re tired of lounging on the beach and looking for a bit of an adventure take to the trails of the marine and national parks that surround Hyams Beach; to the north you’ll find White Sands Walk and on the southern side the beach borders Booderee National Park.

Playa Negra, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

One of Robin's personal favourites and completely low-key on the Costa Rican tourism radar this beach town sits off the Northwest Pacific Coast. With only a few hundred residents the close-knit community is a true hidden gem that offers adventures by land and by sea. While Playa Negra is known as a surfer’s paradise due to it’s first-class waves and breaks, the clear waters also give way to tranquil tide pools that are perfect for swimming. Venture off of the white and/or black-sanded shores and into the wild you’ll find jungle canopy tours, horseback riding and biking/hiking excursions. And if you’re looking to grab some good eats, do some shopping or spice up your nights you’ll be glad to know that this chilled out locale is only 1⁄2 an hour away from the famous Tamarindo.

Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

If you’re looking for a destination that runs a slower pace look no further than Virgin Gorda, with only 8.5 square miles of land this British Virgin Island is fully laid all the way back and dons a slower pace compared to some of the BV Islands. The sea-locked land is rich with African, Indian and Spanish lineage that translates into a beautifully diverse culture. With both leisure and exploration at your finger tips Virgin Gorda is fully equipped with granite grottoes, yacht clubs, nature sanctuaries and 5 different beaches making this Caribbean dream a vacation worth booking.

Angaga Island (Resort), South Ari Atoll, Maldives

With only a 10-15 minute walk from one end to the other, Angaga Island is a quaint island that accommodates the ideal full luxury getaway. Completely off the beaten path this destination is about 25 minutes from the nearest airport and is only accessible via seaplane. Classified as a private island, Angaga is a fully accommodating resort with only 70 beach bungalows that host all the amenities you need; full service spa, fitness center, tennis. And of course offer world-class scuba diving, sailing catamarans, canoeing and surfing; the ultimate private beach gem.
